Moxy Hotels last week announced the opening of its first hotel in California: Moxy San Diego.

Developed in partnership with San Diego-based J Street Hospitality and Azul Hospitality Group, the nine-story, 126-room hotel pays homage to the region’s storied naval past from a camouflage wall in the lobby, to a shipping container lining the CrossFit-inspired fitness center, and additional nautical elements such as porthole mirrors and Navy “dungaree” denim headboards in the rooms. The lobby’s exposed electrical conduit, steel finishing and wood accents will also add to the hotel’s industrial aesthetic.
From the moment guests enter the indoor-outdoor hotel, Insta-worthy moments of cheeky fun are brought to life through Moxy’s playful and thought-provoking design. Instead of the traditional hotel lobby, guests check-in at a custom “trike” where they will receive their digital room entry and Bar Moxy’s signature “Got Moxy #5” welcome nitro-cocktail served from the lively tricycle. Just beyond check-in is a custom $750,000 LED light fixture designed by Canadian-based Moment Factory that spans over the Bar exterior spaces. Upstairs, overlooking the lobby, guests will find a library dotted with books reinforcing San Diego’s naval ties and a topographic map of the San Diego Bay. Additional signature elements include the Moxy Digital Guestbook, streaming videos and images taken within Moxy hotels or tagged #atthemoxy, as well as plenty of tech-savvy gathering spaces that encourage guests to get out of their rooms and take advantage of the community-centric ambiance.
“As with each of its hotels, Moxy tossed out the rulebook and set out to push the envelope with Moxy San Diego,” said Tim Billing, area general manager of Azul Hospitality Group. “We don’t want guests holed up in their rooms, but instead invite them to come play with us and interact with each other in our open floorplan that opens up to the streets of Downtown San Diego via foldaway floor-to-ceiling glass doors.”
Each of the 126 thoughtfully designed guest rooms are both flexible and functional and can easily adapt to the modern traveler’s changing needs. Purposely designed, each room also features signature Moxy open closet pegboards to hang clothing, unprecedented ultra-fast and free Wi-Fi, 55-inch flat-screen smart TVs programmed with Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, and more, and beds framed by an LED-lit platform.

Play All Day at “The Now” – From pinball, classic arcade games, shuffleboard, Jenga and DJ residencies, guests and locals will have a new go-to at “The Now” with no shortage of things to do.

Lobby Perks – Unlike previous Moxy hotels, Moxy San Diego will have an extensive menu serving three meals including grab-and-go breakfasts, lunch, bar bites and a late-night menu.
Tech on Deck – All bedrooms reflect careful consideration of space and functionality and as such are equipped with 55-inch flat screen televisions, built-in USB ports and free, speedy Wi-Fi with one WAP per room.
Bar Moxy – Sip the flavors of San Diego from morning to night with quality coffee courtesy of San Diego Coffee Co., signature and custom brews from San Diego’s buzzing beer scene, and an impressive menu of handcrafted cocktails.
Get Artsy – The back of the hotel will also boast the first San Diego mural by Los Angeles-based Artist Paul Nandee (SWANK), beckoning visitors with Nandee’s distinctive lettering and character creations constructed using cubist angles.
