NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)–March 19, 2002–Most job seekers in the greater New York metropolitan area have not participated in workplace diversity programs, according to recent research findings from The New York Times Job Market, the print and online recruitment services offering of The New York Times advertising department.
Only 21% of New York area job seekers say they have ever participated in a workplace program aimed at increasing diversity, while:
– 59% of hiring managers at mid- to large companies (100+ employees) report that their companies offer diversity programs and
– 35% of hiring managers at small companies (fewer than 100 employees) say their companies offer such programs.
Diversity programs appear to have a positive impact on the proportion of non-whites in management positions among those companies that have such programs. Companies without diversity programs have a significantly lower percentage of non-whites in management positions (28%) than companies with diversity programs (49%), even though the overall proportion of non-whites employed at companies with and without diversity programs is not significantly different (52% with, 46% without).

Among hiring managers with companies that have workplace diversity

Most of the hiring managers from companies that lack diversity policies say their companies are too small to create them (57%). Some say their companies have no need for diversity (38%).
Hiring managers are more likely to report workplace diversity than are job seekers. While many hiring managers (92%) say their workplace is diverse, just three-quarters of job seekers (78%) have worked for an organization they consider diverse.
Most hiring managers and job seekers do not identify a particular New York area organization as being the best at creating workplace diversity. Close to two-thirds of hiring managers (64%) and more than half of job seekers (58%) say there is no single organization representing best practices in workplace diversity in the metropolitan area.
When asked to cite examples of best practices in workplace diversity, hiring managers most often mentioned the healthcare industry (23%), state agencies (15%), McDonalds (15%) and Verizon (15%). Job seekers pointed to McDonalds, AT&T, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and The Gap (5% each).
