Friday 18th. October, 2002.- Today Sol Meliá will be officially inaugurating the Meliá Mérida Boutique Hotel, built within two ancient palaces, the Casa Palacio de los Pacheco and the Palacio de los Mendoza, previously the Hotel Emperatriz. The inauguration tonight will be hosted by President of the Regional Government of Extremadura, Juan Carlos Rodríguez Ibarra, and the Chairman of Sol Meliá, Gabriel Escarrer Juliá, and will also be attended by numerous regional representatives from business and the arts.
The Meliá Mérida Boutique Hotel is located in the central Plaza de España, alongside the City Hall and commercial and cultural heart of the city and has been built within two emblematic buildings: the Palacio de los Pacheco was built in 1802 and has hosted such illustrious guests as Queen Isabel II and her husband Francisco de Asís in 1879, King Alfonso XII in 1875 or King Alfonso XIII in 1905; the Palacio de los Mendoza, a medieval palace built in the 14th. Century on the foundations of a Roman construction, has been home to the Hotel Emperatriz since 1960.
The company Meliá Mérida a joint venture between the authorities of Extremadura and Sol Meliá has invested 13 million Euros in the project which forms part of an agreement signed in 1999 by Sol Meliá and the Regional Government of Extremadura aiming to promote quality tourism in the region. This fits in with the development of the Boutique Hotel brand of Meliá hotels, a new collection of smaller hotels with their own particular style and unique design.
According to Gabriel Escarrer after the incorporation of the Meliá Cáceres Boutique Hotel in 1991, the Tryp Medea in 2000 and the Meliá Trujillo Boutique Hotel almost a year and a half ago, it is a great honor for me to be inaugurating the Meliá Mérida Boutique Hotel today, one of our most beautiful hotels. Now we only have one more objective here: Badajoz, a city in which we hope to soon be present so as to complete the range of destinations we offer in a region with such strong potential for tourism development.
