In April 2014 Wimbledon champion Andy Murray will open a hotel about three miles from his hometown of Dunblane, Scotland. The luxury property, called Cromlix, has already started accepting reservations.
In February, Murray purchased the elegant Victorian mansion, which is set within 34 acres of secluded woodland. The past nine months have been spent refurbishing the property into a hotel that will feature 10 individually designed bedrooms and five suites, each of which has been named after great Scots both past and present – from William Wallace and Robert the Bruce to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Sean Connery.
Scottish pride isn’t just evident in those names. It was also important to Murray to create local jobs – up to 40 people will be employed by the hotel when it’s in full operation – and to share with guests all that makes this area so special. Murray’s motivation in buying and refurbishing Cromlix is to provide an economic boost for the place where he grew up by attracting visitors to this special area and generating revenue for neighboring businesses.
Room rates start at £200 per person, double occupancy, and include a full Scottish breakfast. In addition to its spacious sleeping rooms, the hotel has an array of common areas, including the dining room, two drawing rooms, conservatory, library, reception hall, whisky room, bar and even an on-site chapel. The chapel can be reserved for small weddings of up to 30 people, and larger functions of up to 300 guests can take place either inside or outside the mansion. Corporate meetings can be scheduled in one or more of five rooms.
For those guests hoping to get in touch with their inner Andy Murray, the hotel has a tennis court and practice wall. Other on-site activities include archery, outdoor garden games, billiards, and in-room spa treatments. Guests will find fishing opportunities nearby, as well as hunting and golf options.
The Cromlix estate dates to the early 15th century, and its current mansion was built in 1880. It was converted from a private residence to a luxury country hotel in 1981, but Murray is completely transforming it into a new offering. The property gives its guests easy access to the Scottish countryside but is also a short drive from the cities of Stirling, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Cromlix is being managed on behalf of Murray by Inverlochy Castle Management International (ICMI), which also manages seven other renowned independent properties around Scotland. These include The Atholl in Edinburgh, Blanefield House in Ayr, Greywalls Hotel in Muirfield, Inver Lodge in Lochinver, Inverlochy Castle Hotel in Fort William, Rocpool Reserve Apartments in Edinburgh, and Rocpool Reserve Hotel in Inverness. Like many of its sister properties, Cromlix will put a spotlight on dining. Chef Albert Roux OBE, KFO, owner of Le Gavroche in London – the first United Kingdom restaurant to be awarded three Michelin stars – is part of ICMI’s management team and helps guide the properties and their individual culinary teams as they develop memorable dining experiences under the name “Chez Roux.”
Award-winning Scottish chef Darin Campbell, who hails from the neighboring town of Doune, has joined Cromlix as Executive Head Chef at Scotland’s sixth Chez Roux restaurant. Campbell most recently held that title at another Connoisseurs Scotland property, Hotel du Vin One Devonshire Gardens in Glasgow. He also served as Head Chef at Restaurant Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles resort, yet another Connoisseurs Scotland member. That restaurant is the only in Scotland to boast two Michelin stars, in addition to its four AA rosettes. Campbell and his team will focus on locally sourced produce as they create menus for Cromlix. A three-course menu will be served every day, priced at £26.50 for lunch and £29.50 for dinner.
