Mexican real estate and investment firm Sun-Star Group led by real estate developer Omar O’Rourke Martinez and his partner Thomas Wahl, a seasoned hotel executive, have executed an agreement with Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group, for the development and operation of a Radisson Blu Hotel at Lake Chapala, with an option for additional territories.
Lake Chapala is a popular destination located within 50 kilometers of Guadalajara, Mexico’s second largest city, and located within 25 minutes of Guadalajara’s international airport as well as El Salto, an important industrial corridor and home to the Mexican and Latin American headquarters for many multi-national corporations.
Radisson Blu is an upscale international chain of full service hotels and resorts brand with stunning design and truly innovative service features. These flagship hotels are found in prime locations around the globe, with more than 395 properties now open or in development in more than 110 countries.
“We have examined the Mexican hotel market very carefully and it is no secret that the industry is at a point where many opportunities are emerging to serve both the domestic and international markets for leisure and business travelers”, said Thomas Wahl.
The group selected Ajijic at Mexico’s Lake Chapala for its first development, because of the unique demographic make-up of the market.
“We chose Ajijic and the El Dorado development specifically as our first project for strategic reasons. This popular destination currently has no internationally branded hotels, and not only enjoys tremendous leisure traffic, but is also home to a large international community and actually closer to the airport and commercial activity than downtown Guadalajara”, said Thomas Wahl.
“The El Dorado development simply made perfect sense. It is a premier upscale mixed use development and the addition of an internationally flagged luxury hotel will both complement and enhance the existing facilities. The developer’s long range strategy always included a hotel tower, which provided us with a shovel ready project and made the decision an easy one”.
Omar O’Rourke Martinez commented, “Lake Chapala has always been close to our family’s heart and we have a very strong commitment to the area. We are excited to bring the upscale Radisson Blu brand to Lake Chapala knowing that it will further enhance and establish Lake Chapala as a first class destination”.
Eduardo Hernández Rodríguez, the Group’s CFO added, “Our experience in the Mexican real estate market combined with our international affiliations has already generated a great deal of interest both domestically and internationally in our Lake Chapala project as well as the other territories that are part of our agreement with Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group.”
Construction of The Radisson Blu Resort & Spa Ajijic is slated to begin during the fourth quarter of 2016. The project is estimated to create 200 construction and 80 full time jobs.
