The Tutwiler – A Wyndham Historic Hotel has been named Birmingham's Best Hotel for 2002

Wyndham Property Rated Above All Hotels in Birmingham Metropolitan Area

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (June 2002) — The Tutwiler – A Wyndham Historic Hotel, an Alabama tradition since 1914, is making history again by being named the Best Hotel in Birmingham for 2002 by readers of The Birmingham News. The landmark, which recently joined Historic Hotels of America, also received the designation in 2001.
In its recent Birmingham's Best poll, the daily newspaper invited readers to vote for their favorite hotels, restaurants, tourist sites and personalities. The Tutwiler remained at the top, receiving more votes than any other hotel in the Birmingham Metropolitan Area.
We are very honored to once again be voted the top hotel in Birmingham by readers of The Birmingham News, said hotel general manager Ed Gunderson. We're dedicated to providing the highest level of guest services, food and beverage operations, accommodations, ambiance and meeting facilities. It feels great to see our hard work and dedication paying off.
For business travelers, corporate, association and social groups, the eight-story red brick building is ideal for meetings, banquets, receptions, temporary offices and weddings. History buffs and leisure travelers, on the other hand, visit the property to experience a bygone era when Warren G. Harding was President, Charles Lindbergh was an international hero, and Will Rogers was a premier stage performer.
The Tutwiler, which recently completed a $1.8 million refurbishment, boasts 147 guest rooms and suites accented with turn-of-the-century reproduction fine furniture and white marble-accented bathrooms. The hotel's two key-access concierge floors feature a lounge offering continental breakfast items and evening cocktails and hors d'oeuvres; a library providing periodicals and office equipment; and guest rooms equipped with special amenities.
The landmark hotel is one of only several properties in Alabama to earn Mobil Four-Star and AAA Four Diamond honors. It was the first hotel in the state to receive the Five Star Diamond Award from the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences and the Deluxe rating from the Official Hotel Guide, a publication that serves more than 25,000 travel agents around the world.
Leisure travelers say they enjoy staying at the hotel because it is located near popular tourist attractions such as the Birmingham Museum of Art, the National Civil Rights Institute, the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, Sloss Furnaces, the towering statue of Vulcan on Red Mountain, historic Arlington Mansion, the Five Points South entertainment district, the McWane science center and Imax Theater, and VisionLand, a water-oriented theme park. Visitors can walk across the street to historic Linn Park and the modern Birmingham Public Library, or explore the Birmingham Green (20th Avenue), a nearby shopping and entertainment district.
Tutwiler visitors now can enjoy new authentic Southern amenities and products such as Southernness world class perfume inspired by French master perfumer Phillipe Lorson; Southernness Gentleman 1768 cologne for men; and Southernness Hospitality (sleeping) Powder. They also can view new original Southern-style artwork by Birmingham artist and Southernness owner Benn Johnson. Wyndham ByRequest, Wyndham's newly implemented guest recognition program, provides enhanced, personalized hotel stays for repeat guests.
