More restaurants catering to diet needs
Pasta is out, as is the bread basket. Soy sauce, which contains wheat, is a no-no. Even burgers, which may be bound with bread crumbs, are a red flag.
“It's hard when [restaurants] always put the bread out with olive oil, especially if you're hungry and everyone's eating it around you,” said Sue Messaglia, 41, a teacher from Homewood who was diagnosed nine years ago with celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder set off by gluten.
Whenever Messaglia got the nerve to eat out, she would just order dishes that she knew were gluten-free. But she rarely told the server or chef of her condition because, she said, “I didn't want to make a big deal.”
